About Veronica & blackUnicorn.org

Last modified December 22, 2007

My domain registrar says blackunicorn.org has existed since March 30, 2000 at about 12:20am Pacific time. It was spring break of my freshman year in college (UC Santa Barbara, undeclared). I knew exactly one other person who had a domain name of her own, and besides being jealous of the cachet it seemed to provide her, I realized that there was something to this wondrous thing we call the Internet (or the World Wide Web, or whatever we were calling it back then). Anyway it was before the snark, before we added an s to the end of Internet to make fun of the old folks, before big trucks and series of tubes. Before blogs, really, although it was a blog. It even had a perl guestbook I swiped from Matt’s Script Archive.

It had some writing and some art, and aside from having a few boys develop crushes on me because of it, it didn’t do much else. I’ve redesigned and repurposed it countless number of times, and eventually it settled into what you see today- an art blog, a kind of online sketchbook, a playground for various projects and an announcement space for each.

I was intensely proud of it back when it was a much bigger deal to have a website with your own domain name, and I’m still pretty proud of it today. It has gotten me work and made me friends and kept me in touch. It isn’t my only website, but it’s my favorite.

Oh, about me? I’m just some girl with a long Italian name. I draw pictures of cute things and animals, and I mess around with the internet. By day I make commercials for a local TV station in a very, very small market. By night I occasionally play poker.
